Department of Chemical, Polymer, and Composite Materials Engineering (New Campus) Hosts Seminar on Process Safety Management

On November 12, 2024, the Department of Chemical, Polymer, and Composite Materials Engineering, UET Lahore (New Campus) successfully organized an engaging and insightful seminar on Process Safety Management (PSM), led by Engr. Faiq Rabbani, Safety Manager at Unilever Pakistan. Engr. Rabbani is a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) and recipient of the Rising Safety Star Award from
the National Safety Council, USA. A key highlight of the seminar was the distinction between Cultural Safety and Process Safety, providing attendees with a deeper understanding of how these two elements, while interconnected, each play unique roles in creating a
comprehensive safety strategy. Engr. Rabbani took the audience through critical components of PSM, including HAZOP (Hazard and Operability Studies), Process Hazard Analysis (PHA), Management of Change (MOC), and incident investigation. He emphasized the importance of robust safety protocols in preventing accidents and enhancing operational safety.

Drawing from his experience with the DuPont Process Safety Management Program and the CCPS Process Safety Management Systems, Engr. Rabbani shared practical insights into conducting safety reviews, audits, and implementing effective emergency response protocols. The session also covered best practicesin corporate HSE (Health, Safety, and Environment) and behavioral safety, offering valuable takeaways for professionals in high-risk industries seeking to improve safety standards and reduce operational risks. Dr.-Ing. Izzat Iqbal Cheema, Director of Postgraduate Studies and seminar organizer, thanked Engr. Rabbani for providing such a valuable learning experience to students of the MS Safety, Health, and Environment (SHE) program, who gained actionable insights on the PSM systems. The event was concluded with remarks from Prof. Dr.-Ing. Naveed Ramzan, Dean of the Faculty of Chemical, Metallurgical, and Polymer Engineering and a renowned Chemical Engineer and Process Safety expert. Dr.-Ing. Ramzan commended the efforts of Dr.-Ing. Izzat Iqbal Cheema and Dr. Syed Mohsin Ali Kazmi, Chairman of the Department, for bringing leading HSE experts to the department and providing invaluable exposure to MS SHE students. He highlighted the importance of practical knowledge in HSE education, noting that real-world insights significantly enhance learning outcomes.
