Strengthening Engineering Education Vital for Pakistan’s Development, Highlights UET VC

The Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) recently hosted a panel discussion focused on addressing the challenges faced by engineering education in Pakistan and exploring solutions to strengthen the field. The event brought together prominent academic experts, including Dr. Shahid Munir, Vice Chancellor UET Lahore, who participated as a panelist.

Chairman PEC Engr. Waseem Nazir led the discussion, which was joined by Vice Chairman Engr. Prof. Dr. Suhail Aftab Qureshi, Dean of Electrical, Energy, and Environment at the University of Punjab Dr. Hamid Sattar, Member Governing Body PEC Dr. Khurram, Director PHEC Dr. Tanveer Qasim, Dr. Ali Sajid, and other engineering professionals. The primary goal of the discussion was to address declining admission trends in engineering programs and outline strategies to advance the sector in the coming years.

In his remarks, Chairman PEC Engr. Waseem Nazir highlighted the importance of nurturing Pakistani engineers’ creative talents, stating, “We will support new ideas and innovations from Pakistani engineers to enhance their role in national development.”

Vice Chancellor UET Dr. Shahid Munir emphasized the significance of engineering education and the need for strong policies to tackle the issues the sector faces. Speaking as the head of Pakistan’s oldest engineering institution, he stressed the importance of equipping young engineers with technical skills and creative thinking to enable their contributions to the country’s progress. “Effective and comprehensive strategies are essential to enhance engineering education and address its challenges, ensuring that engineers play a vital role in national development,” Dr. Munir said.

The panelists underscored the need for collective efforts to reverse the decline in engineering education and proposed policy solutions to revitalize the field. Experts called for collaboration and the development of new policies to uplift engineering education, affirming its central role in Pakistan’s advancement.
