Al-Khawarizmi Institute of Computer Science (KICS), UET Lahore, and Korea Invention Promotion Association (KIPA) Signs MoU for Hydropower Project in Punjab, Pakistan

Al-Khawarizmi Institute of Computer Science (KICS), UET Lahore, and the Korea Invention Promotion Association (KIPA) have joined hands to drive renewable energy innovation in Pakistan! Following the MoU signing, KICS hosted a special seminar led by Korean patent expert Mr. Jong Ung Beak, shedding light on the critical role of intellectual property in advancing R&D for clean energy.

In a strategic move to foster renewable energy advancements in Pakistan, the Al-Khawarizmi Institute of Computer Science (KICS) at the University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Lahore has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Korea Invention Promotion Association (KIPA) for the “Development of Hydro Turbine for Hydropower Applications in Punjab, Pakistan”. The signing ceremony took place at KICS, UET Lahore, marking a significant step towards sustainable energy solutions in the region.
Al-Khawarizmi Institute of Computer Science (KICS) is a leading research institute at UET Lahore, known for its extensive contributions in the fields of engineering, computer science, and energy solutions whereas the Korea Invention Promotion Association (KIPA) is a prominent organization dedicated to fostering innovation through IP rights and technological development.
The MoU was signed by Prof. Dr. Waqar Mahmood, Director of KICS, UET Lahore, and Mr. Woonsun Kim, Vice President of KIPA, representing their respective organizations. Other distinguished attendees included Mr. Jong Ung Beak, and Mr. Joohyun Ryu, alongside team members from both organizations. This collaboration seeks to leverage the expertise of both KICS and KIPA to design, develop, and implement hydro turbine technology that is efficient, adaptable, and sustainable for local environments. The project aims to bolster Pakistan’s energy infrastructure and reduce reliance on non-renewable energy sources.
Following the MoU signing, KICS hosted a patent seminar led by Mr. Jong Ung Beak, a renowned Korean patent lawyer, to provide insights into the intellectual property (IP) aspects of the project. The seminar attracted a large audience, including faculty members from both KICS and UET, who were keen to explore the role of patent analysis in advancing R&D initiatives.
During the seminar, Mr. Beak discussed the outcomes and patent analysis results related to hydro turbine technology over the past year. He elaborated on how patent analysis methodologies can streamline R&D processes, prevent duplication of effort, and inspire innovative approaches to design and implementation. The seminar underscored the importance of protecting intellectual property to ensure that technological advancements remain sustainable and beneficial in the long term.
The MoU and subsequent seminar reflect the commitment of KICS, UET Lahore, and KIPA to advance R&D initiatives and provide a robust framework for innovation in Pakistan. The collaboration between KICS and KIPA will not only enhance the technological capabilities of both institutions but also create new opportunities for faculty and researchers to engage in high-impact projects that support Pakistan’s renewable energy goals.
To conclude the collaborative day, the delegation had a formal meeting with the Vice Chancellor of UET Lahore, Prof. Dr. Shahid Munir, who commended the joint efforts of KICS and KIPA in promoting sustainable hydropower solutions for Pakistan. As a token of appreciation, the Vice Chancellor presented souvenirs to the Korean delegation.
